KPEC holds validation workshop for women enterprises

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pass Economic Corridor (KPEC) organized a validation workshop in relation to the scoping exercise for women owned and managed businesses here on Monday at a local hotel.

The study is being implemented by International Consulting Associates (Pvt.) Ltd. in association with Mera Maan (Pvt.) Ltd. The event was attended by various stakeholders representing public sector, private sector, academia, donor agencies, social sector and transgender community.

Addressing the function, Sohail Ahmed, Director General, SDU-P&D, in his opening remarks shed light on the importance of the Khyber Pass trade route and role of women in economic progress of the country. He also emphasized upon the significance of regional integration for economic growth.

Imran Zahoor, Project Director, KPEC, briefed the participants about different initiatives under the KPEC project and the economic impact that the project aims to create in the Greater Western Peshawar region.

Speaking to the participants, Kashif Sehgal, Regional Head, International Consulting Associates (Pvt.) Ltd. shared the study analysis. He further highlighted multiple reasons of impediments to the economic inclusion of the women and the importance of gender inclusive infrastructure to enhance women workforce participation.

While addressing the audience, Shahnaz Kapadia, CEO, Mera Maan (Pvt.) Ltd., pointed out that destination driven entrepreneurship elements need to be integrated into the project to achieve tangible results along with specific interventions required for women enterprise development.

The Chief Guest MPA Wilson Wazir from Khyber District in his closing remarks pointed out that the current government was playing a proactive role to mainstream women and other marginalized groups, adding that in this regard the provincial government had passed various legislations to protect the rights of the women and transgender.

He also thanked the World Bank Group for its support to the project. The event was also attended by provincial chief SMEDA Rashid Aman, DG-PCNA Syed Zahir Ali Shah and Sartaj Ahmed Khan, Provincial Coordinator, FPCCI.
