World Mental Health Day observed in KP

PESHAWAR: The World Mental Health Day 2020 has been marked in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the auspices of Pakistan Psychiatric Society (PPS) here on Saturday.
In this regard, many functions were arranged in the provincial capital Peshawar as well as Mardan, Swat, D.I. Khan and other districts, where mental health experts delivered lectures on awareness regarding psychological problems and general practitioners were given short training about dealing with common psychological and psychiatric disorders to manage them locally.
Main function of the PPS was held at Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) which was hosted by Dr Hooria Rashid, Consultant Psychiatrist RMI, while Prof Dr Khalid Mufti was the chief guest, Prof Dr Muhammad Idrees was the guest of honour and Prof Dr Bashir Ahmad was the guest speaker, whereas Dr Imran Khan, President PPS KP, Dr Mukhtar-ul-Haq Azeemi, General Secretary PPS KP, Prof Dr Muhammad Irfan, Dr Waleed Ahmad, Psychologist Naila Rehman, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and medical students also attended the seminar.
While addressing the audience, the speakers said that nowadays suicide was one of the common untreated psychiatric illnesses and according to a report, one person died in every 40 seconds in the world because of suicide and it was the second major cause of death after road accidents in the age group 14 to 29.
Dr Imran Khan, President PPS KP stated that the government should include the psychiatric treatment in Sehat Sahulat Program as majority of the patients did not consult psychiatrist because they could not afford the expanses of the treatment and that was a major factor behind the growing number of psychiatric diseases.
Similarly, a seminar was also organised at the Khyber Medical University (KMU) in which Secretary Health Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Syed Imtiaz Hussain Shah was the chief guest, whereas Vice Chancellor KMU Prof Dr Zia-ul-Haq, ex-VC KMU Prof Dr Mohammad Dawood Khan and President, Diabetes Association Prof Dr A H Aamir were among the participants.
Beside this, functions were also arranged on eve of the World Mental Health Day at Sayyed Psychiatric Clinic, Horizon and Peshawar Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). Psychiatrists, psychologists and medical students as well as a large number of people from different walks of life participated in the events.
