KMC launches postgraduate course in CBT

PESHAWAR: 6-month postgraduate certificate course in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) has been started at the Department of Psychiatry, Khyber Medical College (KMC), Peshawar.
An event was held at the KMC on Monday in which the course was launched by Prof Dr Mehmood Aurangzeb, Dean, KMC and Chief Executive, KTH/KMC/KCD, whereas the Course Director Prof Dr Bashir Ahmad, Prof Dr Muhammad Idrees, Dr Imran Khan, Brig (R) Prof Mowadat Hussain Rana, psychologist Robina Sarwar and other prominent mental health experts were present on the occasion.
While briefing the participants, the Course Director Prof Dr Bashir Ahmad said that the course was the first of its kind in Pakistan and it was certified and affiliated with the Khyber Medical University, adding that work had almost been completed to upgrade it to a one year diploma course. He further stated that Pakistan did not have enough psychiatrists to meet the needs of the whole population; therefore, there was need for such programs to train the young doctors in psychiatry in order to overcome the mental illnesses in the country.
Prof Dr Mahmood Aurangzeb, Dean, KMC and Chief Executive, KTH/KMC/KCD while addressing the audience said that he appreciated such activities and firmly standing behind any new development that was in the larger public interest.
Prof Dr Muhammad Idrees and Dr Imran Khan also gave suggestions that how to overcome the lack of qualified psychiatrists in the country and added that there was need to train the general physicians in mental healthcare and to start a postgraduate diploma in psychiatry.
