Urgent need for educational reforms

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter to highlight the pressing issue that we are facing in our society today i.e. the need for reforms in our educational system, which continues to remain the same despite the rapid advancements in the tech world and science. In spite of the global shift towards more skill-based learning and conceptual learning, our educational system still mainly focuses on rote memorization over critical thinking and practical skill development, failing to prepare the graduates for the real-world challenges.

The course curriculum we are following currently is highly based on theory and knowledge-based learning, leaving little to no room for critical thinkers and creative minds to blossom and thrive. In an era marked by rapid technological advancements and discoveries, how can the youth continue to progress if our education remains centered solely on memorizing established and proven facts? This approach to learning discourages independent thinking and results in a workforce that struggles to adopt to modern-day demands.

Another factor that needs to be considered is that no two minds are alike. Albert Einstein once said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Trying to teach every mind with the same method is like expecting all seeds to grow into the same tree – each mind learns differently, and our approach must adopt to nurture its unique potential.

To address these issues, we need to shift from the traditional teaching methods to more interactive, research-based, and skill-oriented approach that not only teaches us creativity but also important soft skills like financial literacy, digital competence, and effective communication for personal and professional success. Policy makers and the government should take proper steps towards educational reforms and invest more in curriculum development and teacher training to create a system that fosters young and intellectual individuals.

The youth of today are the architects of tomorrow. They are directly linked to their nation. So, to invest in a good educational system is to ensure a progressing and thriving nation. It is time to change the old ways and take concrete steps that ensure an educational system not just based on attaining good grades, but nurtures the minds capable of being the future leaders and shaping a bright future.
