Pakistan’s relationship with its neighboring countries, India, Afghanistan, Iran and China, are crucial for its foreign policy and national interests. However, these relationships have been strained due to various historical, ideological and territorial disputes. With India, Pakistan’s longstanding rival, the situation is particularly tense. The two nations have been engaged in a nuclear arms race, and their dispute over Kashmir remain unresolved. The lack of trust and diplomatic efforts has led to a security dilemma, exacerbating the socio-economic challenges faced by both the countries.
In contrast, Pakistan’s relationship with China is a beacon of hope. The two countries have a long-standing strategic partnership, with China investing heavily in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This partnership has not only strengthened Pakistan’s economy but also provided a counterbalance to India’s influence in the region. Furthermore, Pakistan’s relationship with China has the potential to promote regional stability and prosperity.
Pakistan’s relationship with Afghanistan is also critical, given their shared history, culture and geography. However, the two countries have had a tumultuous relationship, with disputes over the Durand Line and cross-border terrorism. It is essential for Pakistan to work toward resolving these issues and strengthening its ties with Afghanistan. A stable and secure Afghanistan is in Pakistan’s best interest, and the two countries must work together to promote regional peace and stability.
To improve its relationships with its neighbors, Pakistan must adopt a more comprehensive approach. This includes diplomatic efforts to engage in sustained and inclusive dialogue, economic cooperation to promote mutual benefits and interdependence, and regional stability to address common challenges such as terrorism, poverty and climate change. By adopting this approach, Pakistan can decrease regional problems, boost bilateral trade and promote peace and stability in the region. So, it is high time for Pakistan to prioritize its relationship with its neighbors and work toward a more prosperous and secure South Asia.
