Pakistan’s consumer market has become a playground for brands and companies to exploit and manipulate consumers with impunity. The lack of effective regulatory oversight and enforcement has created a culture of corporate recklessness, where brands prioritize profits over people. So, it is high time for the authorities concerned to wake up and take a decisive action to protect consumer rights in the country.
From consumer goods to retail and services, almost every brand in Pakistan is guilty of exploiting consumers in one way or another. Whether it is false advertising, substandard products, or exorbitant pricing, consumers are being taken for a ride. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that many brands are using misleading labels, hidden charges, and deceptive marketing tactics to dupe consumers.
The authorities’ silence on this pressing issue is deafening, and they seem to be turning a blind eye to these malpractices. The government’s inaction has emboldened brands to continue exploiting consumers, knowing that they will face no consequences.
The impacts of this exploitation are far-reaching. Consumers are being fleeced of their hard-earned money, and their trust in brands is being eroded. The lack of accountability is also stifling competition, as honest businesses are being pushed out by unscrupulous operators.
To address this critical situation, the government must take immediate action to strengthen consumer protection laws and enforcement mechanisms. This includes increasing penalties for brands that engage in exploitative practices, establishing a consumer protection agency, and launching public awareness campaigns to educate consumers about their rights.
The time for bringing a positive change in the country has come now. All such brands must be held accountable for their actions, and consumers must be protected from further exploitation. The government must ensure that the rights of consumers are safeguarded and they are treated fairly by brands, while anything less is unacceptable.
