PESHAWAR: Usman Khan Marwat, Chairman, City Metropolitan Council, Hayatabad has urged the high-ups to impose immediate ban on all polluting vehicles in the city and said that urgent steps against air pollution were required to save precious lives.

In a letter to Commissioner Peshawar, he stated that Peshawar was the second most polluted city after Lahore in Pakistan which was a very alarming news.

According to the report, titled “The Status of Air Quality of Peshawar”, published in 2022, transport accounts for 70 percent of emissions, formal industry at 20 percent, followed by informal units like brick kilns, municipal waste and domestic firewood burning etc.

According to the WHO report in 2023, “Air pollution throughout the year cuts 5 to 6 years of life expectancy of the population at large in South Asian nations including Pakistan.”

The letter states, in a meeting held at Commissioner’s office with stakeholders and district administration in July 2024, the transport department was directed to take action against polluting old buses and other vehicles. The deadline set for dismantling the old school buses by transport department passed in August without any action, whereas the old buses are still plying the roads, making breathing difficult for the people.

It is also shocking how the students of mostly elite schools and colleges are made to suffer the terrible health impacts of the vehicle emissions, adds the letter.
