AWKUM to establish modern yeast research lab

MARDAN: Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM) and Hebai Agriculture University, China will jointly establish the world’s most modern yeast research laboratory at a cost of Rs 30 crores at AWKUM.
According to a press release, the research project will be completed under the leadership of Dr Zia-ul-Islam, an internationally renowned researcher of the Department of Biotechnology, AWKUM and Prof Fanali Zing of Hebai Agriculture University, China.
The project aims to meet the shortage of protein in animal feed in Pakistan and China. The establishment of the modern lab will significantly reduce the import of protein in Pakistan and save the country’s valuable foreign exchange.
The duration of the project is three years, while under this project 50 students and faculty members will be trained in China and the students of AWKUM will be given special scholarships for MPhil and PhD studies, adds the press release.
Prof Dr Zahir Shah, Vice Chancellor, AWKUM, while commenting on this development termed it a great achievement and said that AWKUM would utilize all of its available resources in this regard.
