Private hospitals exploiting workers
Editorial
A large number of private hospitals in Peshawar and other cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are shamefully exploiting their own workers e.g. sweepers, office/ward boys, and security guards. Actually, they are considered the backbone of a healthcare setup, but are being paid a mere fraction of their rightful wages.
In documents, they receive the minimum wage of Rs 36,000, as officially declared by the KP government, but in reality, they are handed a paltry Rs 15,000-20,000. This blatant disregard for law and human rights is a stain on the conscience of society.
Similarly, the exploitation of these workers is not only a violation of their basic rights, but also a betrayal of the trust that patients place in such hospitals. So, how can these institutions be tasked with healing and care that demonstrate such a callous disregard for their own staff? The disparity between the documented and actual wages is a very clear indication of the widespread corruption and abuse of power.
In this regard, the KP government and its relevant higher authorities must take an immediate action to address this injustice, while such private hospitals must be held accountable for their negative actions and the workers must receive their rightful dues.
Apart from this, the high-ups should ensure that labor laws are enforced at all these private healthcare setups, and those found guilty of such brutal exploitation are properly punished.
It is more important to note that our healthcare workers deserve a better economic status in society, so it is the right time for KP government to safeguard their basic rights and eradicate this harsh exploitation in larger public interest.
