Northwest School of Medicine students stage protest against college admin

PESHAWAR: Tensions ran high at Northwest School of Medicine (NWSM) as students staged a huge protest against the college administration, chanting slogans and demanding justice, here on Thursday. The protest was sparked by the administration’s decision to impose heavy fines Rs50,000-80,000 on students for short attendance.

According to sources, the students were fined up to Rs80,000 for missing the classes, which they claimed highly unfair and excessive. The students argued that the fines were not only a financial burden but also a demotivating factor, affecting their academic performance.

The protesters demanded that the administration must review its attendance policy and waive the fines. They also called for a more lenient approach, taking into account the challenges faced by students in attending the classes regularly.

“We understand the importance of attendance, but the fines are too harsh,” said a protesting student, requesting anonymity. “We are already under so much pressure to perform well, and this just adds to our stress.”

After the protest, the Khyber Medical University administration constituted a fact-finding committee to look into the matter of penalty imposed on the students of NWSM on account of short attendance, while the committee shall submit the report within one week.

To take a comment, this scribe contacted the head of media of NWSM, Aliya Syed, and she responded, “The issue is resolved.”
