So-called ORICs in KP’s private universities
Editorial
The Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) is considered as a vital component of any reputable university, fostering a culture of research and innovation. However, in majority of the private universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, ORIC exists only in name and documents, lacking the necessary resources and funding to promote meaningful research and commercialization.
This stark reality is a cause for concern, as it hinders the growth of a research-driven ecosystem in the province. The absence of functional ORICs in private universities means that students and faculty members are deprived of opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research, innovate, and commercialize their ideas.
The consequences are far-reaching, with KP’s private universities trying to produce industry-ready graduates, and the province missing out on potential economic benefits that research and innovation can bring.
As the future of KP’s youth and the province’s economic growth depend on it, so, it is the right time to move beyond mere formalities and create a vibrant research ecosystem that can drive progress and prosperity.
Therefore, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the Higher Education Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other relevant authorities should take immediate action against such private universities and hold them accountable for establishing functional ORICs to promote research and innovation in the province.
