PESHAWAR: The University of Engineering and Applied Sciences (UEAS), Swat promoted as one of the flagship projects of the PTI government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (2018-2022), has turned into a white elephant, sparking outrage and demand for accountability, as till date, Rs1.9bn has been utilized, but around 100 students are only enrolled since 2021, raising questions on the performance of the university administration.
Sources revealed that the lack of vision and a proper direction, perpetuating a culture of malpractices and corruption, while the university’s mismanagement had put the future of its students at great risk, prompting widespread criticism and calls for an independent inquiry.
The sources continued that the project’s dismal performance and alleged corruption had raised questions about the utilization of public funds and the commitment to quality education, adding that the government should intervene and ensure transparency, accountability, and a clear roadmap for the university’s future.
Despite passing of more than 3-year, still the university was not accredited by the relevant councils which was a very shameful situation that after utilizing huge public funds the administration failed to get even basic registration certifications, an official of the UEAS said on the condition of anonymity.
As the controversy unfolds, students, parents, and educationists are demanding a swift action to salvage the university’s reputation and guarantee a secure academic environment.
The secretary higher education department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Kamran Afridi and the provincial minister for higher education Meena Khan Afridi were contacted by this scribe to take their comments on the matter, but they did not attend the call.
