Govt servants in media
Editorial
Apart from active participation in politics, a large number of government employees in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are also working in media industry – which is a gross violation of the civil servants rules but the provincial government has adopted silence over this matter since long.
In this regard, many government servants are working as anchors at different TV channels, while a large number of them are performing duties at various newspapers as sub-editors, reporters, photographers, and marketing officers. Last but not the least, on the basis of working in media, these government employees-cum-journalists are also the members of journalistic associations and press clubs throughout the province.
The main purpose of working in media by these civil servants, including school teachers, clerks, faculty members and administrative officers of universities, and others, is to get an authoritative and influential position in society, as in government service they are strictly bound to follow the orders of the government, however, as media persons they have a vast level of freedom and satisfaction, while they want to be in the list of ‘untouchables’.
Here, a suggestion arises that if these government employees are highly interested in journalism, they should resign from their jobs and join the media openly, but their working in news media at the cost of public exchequer is an injustice and a wastage of national financial resources for their vested interests.
Therefore, the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, chief secretary KP, and other higher authorities must take a strict action against all these civil servants and initiate a plan to implement the civil servants rules in letter and spirit. Furthermore, all the government employees must be monitored on monthly basis in this context, while they should be bound only to the duty of state by directing them to realistically follow the service rules.
