Govt employees in politics

Editorial

There are multiple challenges to the newly-elected provincial government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, however, in this regard, one of the big challenges is the involvement of government employees in politics openly – which raises a serious question that either they are the servants of state or political parties?

It is not an unknown fact that a large number of civil servants have been actively involved in politics in KP in different times and occasions, either these were elections or other political events. Continuing this trend, during the general elections 2024, a good number of government employees were involved in the campaigns of their affiliated political parties throughout the province which is completely illegal as the government servants cannot participate in politics.

Similarly, a number of such employees have been openly supporting their affiliated political parties on social media which is also a gross violation of law and code of conduct for government servants, however, the authorities concerned and high-ups have adopted silence over such malpractice.

A very important point here is that, if these employees are extremely interested in politics, they should resign from their jobs and join politics, however, their participation in politics at the cost of public exchequer is a big injustice as it is a huge wastage of national financial resources for their vested interest while the nation will never forgive them for this loss.

Therefore, the incumbent KP government should take notice of this issue on priority basis and make all the civil servants bound only to the duty of state and should also direct them to follow the service rules in letter and spirit. After this, if any employee violates the government directions, he/she must be awarded exemplary punishment by terminating from service as the national financial resources should be utilized exclusively for public, not for these political workers under the cover of government employment.
