Uncontrolled industrial transportation in Peshawar

Editorial

It has been learned that some of the industrial units, probably match factories, located at Hayatabad Industrial Estate are grossly violating the traffic rules as their transportation vehicles – which carry heavy logs of wood for them, regularly pass through the GT Road, Saddar, and University Road, instead of Ring Road – that is specifically constructed for such traffic, after 8pm till late night every day, as after this time, the traffic police of the provincial metropolis leave the roads and traffic at the mercy of God only.

It is much important to note that using the above mentioned roads instead of Ring Road is not only illegal, as Ring Road is purposefully and exclusively built for those heavy-duty vehicles which carry raw material and other goods to Hayatabad Industrial Estate, but such transportation is also putting the precious public lives at high risk, as these vehicles are extremely overloaded, without following the prescribed safety measures.

These heavily loaded vehicles i.e. tractor trailers are endangering the lives of people because there are no special arrangements for carrying the load but their staff just fasten the wood with a normal rope which might get broken any time in an accident and the huge logs of wood might fall down on nearby passing cars, motorbikes, and other public vehicles.

Therefore, it is need of the time that the Caretaker Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Inspector General of Police, secretaries of the departments of transport and industries, and the other high-ups should take immediate notice of this vulnerable situation and take strict action against all those elements who are violating the law and putting the public lives at risk.

In this regard, an effective and sustainable strategy should be devised by the above as well as the other concerned stakeholders and authorities not only to implement the traffic laws in a true sense but also to protect the precious human lives from any unexpected unpleasant incident due to such uncontrolled industrial transportation in the city.
