PIMC marks International Overdose Awareness Day

PESHAWAR: Pak International Medical College (PIMC), Hayatabad hosted a significant commemoration event to mark the International Overdose Awareness Day here on Thursday.

The event brought together diverse audience, including students, faculty members, staff, and medical practitioners to address the pressing issue of drug abuse and the perilous effects of overdosing.

“Worldwide, about 0.5 million deaths are attributable to overdose. More than 70 percent of these deaths are related to opioids, with more than 30 percent of those deaths caused by overdose. Similarly, about 7 million of Pakistanis are involved in taking drugs, amongst which 4 million use cannabis and 2.7 million use opioids,” the speakers stated.

The purpose of the event was to spotlight the inherent risks of drug abuse and the grave threat of drug overdose. Throughout the event, educational materials were thoughtfully distributed, equipping attendees with comprehensive information about drug prevention strategies, overdose management techniques, and available resources for both the support and treatment.

Dr Amin Jan, Principal, Pak International Medical College, highlighted that the event catalyzed open dialogues about addiction, the destigmatization of the issue, effective treatment approaches, and the pivotal role of community support.
