IER holds seminar on national curriculum

PESHAWAR: A seminar, titled “National Curriculum Debate” was organized by the Institute on Education and Research (IER), University of Peshawar (UoP) in collaboration with Dosti Foundation on August 16 – 17, 2023. The aim of the seminar was to debate the curriculum as it plays a vital role in shaping the education system, guiding what students learn, and how they learn it.

The participants said, “It influences individual development, societal values, and the ability of education to prepare students for an ever-changing world, and engaging them in thoughtful discussions about curriculum choices is crucial to ensuring the best possible education for all the students.”

The seminar was formally inaugurated by Prof Dr Johar Ali, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, UoP and Prof Dr Hafiz Inamullah, Director, IER. The inaugural ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Naeem Zahid, whereas, Director, IER, Prof Dr Hafiz Inamullah welcomed the participants and shed light on the importance of the seminar.

He addressed the seminar, emphasizing that the IER was committed to advancing education through meaningful discussions and collaborative efforts. He added that the seminar addressed pressing questions surrounding curriculum development in the context of changing societal needs, technological advancements, and global challenges.

Prof Johar Ali, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, appreciated the efforts of Prof Hafiz Inamullah and noted that the chosen topic had been sidelined for a long time. He stressed on the importance of managing the curriculum in a balanced manner that it neither burdened the teachers and students nor left them without substantial learning at the end of the course.

The event was attended by educators, researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders to explore the evolving landscape of curriculum design and its implications for the future of education. Distinguished speakers, experts and panelists were engaged in lively discussions, sharing insights and diverse perspectives that shed light on the intricate relationship between the curricula and learning outcomes.

The seminar was meant for exchanging ideas, sharing innovative approaches, and critically analyzing the role of curricula in shaping the students’ holistic development. The event concluded that the ongoing curriculum debate was crucial for driving educational excellence, and a well-crafted curriculum could play a pivotal role in preparing students for the complexities of the modern world.

At the end, former Education Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sardar Hussain Babak, Secretary E&S Education Department Motasim Billah Shah and Director IER Prof Hafiz Inamullah presented shields to guests and speakers. Certificates were also distributed among the presenters and organizers.
